Rock Star Life Coach

You came to this page by accident or intent.  Maybe it’s late at night and you’re filling up the Google search bar with all the questions you can think of, searching for answers that will hopefully help you find a little peace so you can sleep.  Your questions led you to my page, or perhaps someone gave you my name and you have come directly here.  Either way, you are definitely here by design, so welcome!

If you are wondering what I do as a Life Coach, I would say my primary job is Lizard Tamer.  Bet you didn’t see that coming, did you?  You see, we all have this part of our brains often referred to as our “lizard brain”.  That part of our brain has been functioning in humans since before Fred Flintstone.

Martha Beck says in her book Steering by Starlight:

“ The entire purpose of your reptile brain is to continually broadcast survival  alarm reactions that keep animals alive in the wild. These fears fall into two different categories: lack, and attack. On one hand, our reptile brains are convinced that we lack everything we need: we don’t have enough time, money, everything. On the other hand, something terrible is about to happen. A predator– human or animal–is poised to snatch us! That makes sense if we’re hiding in a cave somewhere, but when we’re home in bed, our imaginations can fixate on catastrophes that are so vague and hard to ward off that they fill us with anxiety that has no clear action implication.”

Seth Godin sums it up a bit.  He says “The lizard brain only wants to eat and be safe.”

So what does this all have to do with you? More than likely, it’s that lizard brain that is keeping you awake at night. It’s causing the anxiety that has you trying to get one good deep breath in before you meet with your boss or have that talk with your mom or your partner or your roommate.  It’s feeding those fears that lead to the self talk that’s critical and definitely non-productive. Self talk like…

  • If I follow my heart, my family will desert me and I’ll be alone. Forever. And ever.
  • If I stand up for myself, everyone will laugh. Forever.
  • It’s better to play small than risk getting hurt (or losing or failing or _____________) Ever.
  • I can tell you what I really think, who I really am…but you might not like me, so it’s better to be who you want me to be.

Get the idea? We’re afraid of not having enough (friends, money, love, respect, you name it) and we’re afraid of being attacked (perhaps not by saber-tooth tigers anymore, but the adrenaline is pumping just the same).  That’s where your friendly Lizard Tamer, aka Life Coach, comes in.  Based on the training I’ve had and the tools I teach, you can learn to tame your own lizard.  We’ll teach him to sit, stay, roll over, play dead…any number of tricks that will keep him busy and out of your way. In the meantime, you can get on with the joy of living a better life.

Now you know a bit about coaching, so here’s a few notes about me.

  • I trained under and was personally certified as a Life Coach by Dr. Martha Beck, former Harvard professor, New York Times bestselling author, and monthly columnist for O magazine.

  •  In addition to coaching my rock star clients, I put on my rock star boots at night and perform as a lead singer with a classic rock and soul band.

  •  My life has evolved over the years from a Speech Therapist, to corporate management positions spent traveling the country, to marriage to a man from Holland (which led to traveling the world!).  I gave up the lucrative power job, along with the power suits, to become a stay at home mom, raising two amazing young men.  They are grown and about to embark on married lives of their own this year.
  •  And now, here I am,  working with  men and women who are seeking ways out of the painful thoughts and limiting beliefs that keep them tied down to lives that are ‘less than’.  And I absolutely have a life that rocks, on and off the stage.

I’ve been there. I’ve felt less than. I’ve given up. I’ve given in. I’ve lived based on how I thought I “should” be living. I’ve done what “everybody” said I should. I’ve been pushed, doubted, trumped, dumped and defeated.

That’s no way to live. It’s just not. I know another way.

I turned my life around. I tamed my lizard. (Or lizards. Some days I have multiples, it seems.)
